Ruqyah Shar’iyyah: Meaning, Authentic Method & Practical Guidance
What is Ruqyah Shar’iyyah? A clear introduction to Qur’anic recitation, authentic prayers and the principles that keep spiritual guidance rooted in faith.

What does Ruqyah Shar’iyyah mean?
Ruqyah is the recitation of Qur’anic passages and permissible supplications while seeking Allah’s help. It is an act of worship and remembrance, not a mysterious formula or a guarantee of a particular outcome.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ permitted ruqyah when it is free from shirk (associating partners with Allah). This principle is recorded in Sahih Muslim. Its purpose is to seek help from Allah through words and practices consistent with Islamic belief.
Qur’anic recitation and supplication
Among the passages commonly recited are Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, and the last three chapters of the Qur’an: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas. A person may recite them with understanding and sincere intention and make personal du‘a for well-being and protection.
The Qur’an describes itself as a healing and mercy for believers (Surah Al-Isra 17:82). This spiritual understanding should never be used to dismiss a medical concern or to promise a cure for a specific illness.
A simple, respectful approach
Begin with a sincere intention, perform the recitation calmly, and ask Allah for protection and peace. Avoid unknown formulas, fear-based claims, secret payments for ‘guaranteed’ results, or anything that suggests power independent of Allah.
It is acceptable to ask a knowledgeable, trustworthy person for guidance, while keeping personal boundaries and privacy in mind. There is no need for frightening demonstrations or pressure.
When professional help matters
Difficulty sleeping, panic, pain, unusual perceptions or persistent distress may have physical or psychological causes. Seek care from a qualified healthcare professional when symptoms are troubling. Spiritual practices can be a personal source of comfort alongside appropriate treatment, not in place of it.
