How to Perform Istikhara for Important Life Decisions
Istikhara helps a believer ask Allah for what is best while continuing to think, consult and make responsible decisions.

The purpose of Istikhara
Istikhara is a supplication asking Allah to guide us towards what is good when we face a permissible decision. The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions the prayer of Istikhara, as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.
It does not mean that we must wait for a dream, a sign or someone else to decide for us. Sound judgment and consultation remain important.
The prayer and supplication
A person typically prays two voluntary rak‘ahs and then makes the known du‘a of Istikhara, asking Allah to make what is best easy and turn away what is harmful. Use a reliable source for the complete authentic supplication and its meaning.
You can ask about a marriage proposal, career option or journey, provided the choice itself is religiously permissible.
Combine faith with practical steps
Gather reliable information, consult knowledgeable people, understand your responsibilities and then act with trust in Allah. You need not force a symbolic interpretation of everyday events.
A private consultation may help you organize questions, but no person can promise to disclose unseen outcomes or guarantee a marriage or business result.
A balanced decision
Istikhara is not a replacement for checking facts, obtaining medical or legal advice where relevant, or respecting another person’s consent. Keep faith and informed action together.
